How to Install and Fix Teredo Tunneling Adapter

What is Microsoft Teredo Tunneling Adapter? It function as an interpreter for IPv4 and IPv6. Every device that connected to the internet is assigned an IP address mostly IPv4. Due to heavy internet usage and increasing internet users, IPv6 was introduce in the 90s because it is most likely IPv4 address will be fully occupied. IPv4 and IPv6 are not directly interoperable, in a simple word they cannot directly communicate with each other, so Teredo Tunneling Adapter simply work as an interpreter for IPv4 and IPv6.This article will cover only Windows 7 and Windows 8.

How to Install/Re-Install Microsoft Teredo Networking Adapter
You don;t have to download the Teredo tunneling adapter driver since it is already available on your system. Just follow this step to install it.

1. Open device manager and click on action, select add legacy hardware.
If there are no "add legacy hardware", click on any devices then you will see the option is available.

2. Welcome to the add hardware Wizard - Click next .
3. Search for install the hardware automatically - Click Next.
4. The Wizard could not Find find any new hardware on your computer -  Click Next.
5. Now select Network Adapter from The list.
6. Select Microsoft from the left column and select Microsoft Teredo Tunneling Adapter on the right column.
7. Press Next and Next again to start the installation.


Fix Teredo Tunneling Adapter Error Using Registry Editor
This method commonly use to fix "Teredo Tunneling Adapter Cannot Start"  followed by error code such as (error code 10). We also use this method to enable and Disable IPv6 using registry editor.

1. Open Registry Editor by click start and type regedit.  Windows 8 - go to search and write regedit.
2. Navigate through:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\SERVICES\TCPIP6\PARAMETERS.

3. Double click on DisableComponents and enter the value "0" for windows 7 and 0xFFFFFFCF for windows 8. By entering this value it will enable IPv6 and Teredo.
Disable component value can be edited to disable and enable IPv6.

You can also change the value for other setting :

(hexadecimal Value - default)

  • 1 Disable tunnel interfaces
  • 2 Disable 6to4
  • 4 Disable ISATAP
  • 8 Disable Teredo
  • 10 Disable LAN and PPP interfaces
  • 20 Set preference of IPv4 over IPv6
  • FF Disable IPv6 completely

(decimal value)
  • 1 Disable tunnel interfaces
  • 2 Disable 6to4
  • 4 Disable ISATAP
  • 8 Disable Teredo
  • 16 Disable LAN and PPP interfaces
  • 32 Set preference of IPv4 over IPv6
  • 255 Disable IPv6 completely

How to Disable and Enable Teredo Using Device Manager
By default Teredo is enable in Windows 7, while in Windows Vista it is enable but inactive. You can easily enable and disable it by using device manager. 

1. Open Device Manager, click on view and select show hidden device.
You can show and hide hidden device by using the VIEW tabs in device manager.
2. Look for Network adapter and click the arrow to expand it. Look for Teredo Tunneling Pseudo-Interface.
3. Right click on it and select disable to disable it. If you see yellow exclamation mark it means you need to install the Teredo Tunneling Adapter driver. To enable it just right click again and select enable.
Just right click to disable and enable Teredo/IPv6 in device manager.
